Migraine

Migraine is a type of headache, but of more severe intensity and in order to treat it, its important to have complete knowledge about it. Typical migraine starts as a headache in the morning, originating above the eyes and travelling from back of head to cause pain in entire head. Depending upon the condition of the patient, migraine pain can last from few hours to few weeks.

Migraine is typically classified in two broad categories, normal and special. In normal migraine, headache starts all of a sudden, but in special type of migraine, before the headache starts patient experience other symptoms like bright light in front of eyes, vertigo etc. In both types of migraine the patient doesn’t like light and prefer lying in dark room.

Precautions: Migraine causes lot of unease to the patient and its important to take proper precautions during its attack in order to recover from it at the earliest.

  • During migraine attack, patient should sleep without pillow.
  • Patient should be in dim lite room, away from bright light and avoid going out in sunlight.
  • Patient should not be empty stomach and should especially take healthy breakfast.
  • Migraine patient should regularly monitor blood pressure and get eyes tested. As both these problems elevate migraine.
  • Migraine patient should avoid consuming alcohol, meat, fried foods etc.

Foods to consume during migraine attack:

  • Broccoli is rich in magnesium, which proves effective in controlling headache. Steamed or boiled broccoli can be very effective.
  • Green leafy vegetables also have higher magnesium content.
  • Seafood has omega 3 fatty acids, which are known to control headaches.
  • Pearl millet has high fiber content, antioxidants and minerals that are good in headaches.
  • Take atleast 12-14 glasses of water in a day, to keep body and mind cool.

Steps to take during migraine attack:

  • During migraine attack, gently massage the head, neck and shoulders with light aroma oil.
  • Dip a towel in hot water and foment the part with pain with it.
  • Take plenty of sleep.
  • Grind lemon peel and apply it on head.

Although the exact causal factors of migraine are still not clear, but unhealthy life-style, stress full job, high blood pressure etc. are all responsible for migraine attacks.
